Owen, 12, has always been passionate about music and beginning at age three, has learned to play a variety of instruments.
When Owen was diagnosed with a brain tumor last year, music served as a welcomed distraction from the daily stresses of his illness. Early in his treatment, he was introduced to music therapy, which lightened his spirits on even the hardest of days.
Owen wished to have a mobile recording studio of his very own, where he could record, remix, and listen to his own songs – whether in the hospital or at home. With advice from his music therapists, Owen diligently selected music software and a laptop. With great excitement, he requested the digital drum kit and keyboard system he had been eyeing. Noise cancelling headphones, a professional grade microphone and sound proof panels gave Owen’s studio a professional touch and were installed quickly and quietly one afternoon – to Owen’s delightful surprise! Returning home to discover his new musical hub, he reveled in the joys of a master composer, in time with the thump-thump percussion of his grateful heart.
Staying engaged in his passion is great medicine for Owen. As he holds tight to his aspirations as a musician, the music he creates is a means of expression, a creative outlet, and a lasting reminder of the transformative power of his heartfelt wish.
