Shrieking with pure delight, Teaghan finishes up her second roller coaster ride and asks if she can go again! At four years old, her bravery on the fast-paced ride may seem unexpected to some, but to her parents, Mandy and James, it represents so much more.
Here, Mandy and James share Teaghan's story:
Teaghan is kind, beautiful, smart, and silly. She loves playing sports, doing arts and crafts, singing, dancing, swinging up to the sky on her swingset, and playing with her little brother. She is an amazing big sister.
Teaghan was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia just days after she turned two years old. After one month of inpatient treatment at Boston Children’s Hospital, she underwent two years of outpatient treatment – 781 days, to be exact. Her diagnosis turned our world upside down in a second. Her illness gave us a new outlook on life. Every day is truly a gift.
We learned about Make-A-Wish through a nurse case manager at our insurance company. At the time, Teaghan was obsessed with Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Frozen, which she had watched while in the hospital. So,when she said she wished to go “to Mickey’s house,” it was clear a trip to Walt Disney World® Resort was the perfect fit.
Teaghan’s favorite parts of the trip were meeting – and dancing! – with characters, going on the rides – especially the roller coasters, swimming, and being part of The Lion King show.
After riding Thunder Mountain for the second time in a row, she came running off, smiling as big as could be, asking if she could go on again! It was somewhat ironic how much she loved all the roller coasters, considering the last few years for our family was one big roller coaster ride of ups and downs.
Over the two years prior to her trip, Teaghan was surrounded by situations that many adults have a hard time handling: needles, surgeries, chemotherapy. On her wish trip, it was all about her and it was all about fun. We have never seen her so happy. She was more outgoing, and her beautiful smile never left her face.
Teaghan’s wish was our first family vacation, and our kids first time on an airplane. It allowed our family to unwind and reconnect without the stress of cancer treatments. Seeing Teaghan so happy and so full of life, filled our hearts over and over again.
Thank you to Disney and to all of the Make-A-Wish® Massachusetts and Rhode Island supporters who helped make Teaghan’s wish come true. You are angels on earth. The support provided to families likes ours is indescribable. We are so grateful to have had this opportunity.
