Last September, Matthew was diagnosed with a life-threatening bone marrow disorder. The teen, known as “The Mayor” in his hometown for his gentle friendliness, began a long journey as physicians established a care regime to address the many effects of his illness. A year later, Matthew continues his treatment armed with the uplifting joy and hope that come from a wish fulfilled!
Matthew, 15, drew inspiration for his wish from a documentary about cruise ships. He wished to travel through the Caribbean seas but not just on any boat. Matthew wished to make his voyage on Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Sea, one of the two largest cruise ships in the world.
The aspiring Captain Matthew explored the entire ship over the course of the trip and his curiosity was rewarded around every corner. He discovered a hidden oasis that offered breathtaking views of the ocean, enjoyed a private tour of the bridge, and even met the Allure’s captain.
“Matthew has spent the last few years as a frequent flyer at many hospitals,” says his mom, Susan. “He needed to take a much-needed break and enjoy life without thinking of his illness.”
