Warm sand, fresh sea breezes, and your loved ones at your side: the recipe for a perfect summer day. For Emma, 11, it is so much more.
On the island of Hawaii, the anxieties and uncertainties from two years of leukemia treatment subside in Emma’s heart and are carried away by the tide. For her -- and for her entire family -- the opportunity to have a wish granted offers a welcome chance to pause and regroup.
Emma snorkels among colorful fish in Hanauma Bay, travels into deep waters on a submarine ride, and visits Sea Life Park where she relishes meeting dolphins and sea lions. Through these activities, she and her family begin to reclaim what her illness had diminished:
"Emma enjoyed every moment…It was the first time everyone in our family smiled and laughed freely from our heart[s] after two years of a most difficult time of fighting for survival. It brought us back to the feeling of normality that seemed to be such a luxury to us in the past,” says Emma’s mom, Jingjing.
