Building Hope at LEGOLAND

  • "Ben and Gabe are best friends. Part of that bond is the result of leaning on each other during tough times. And part of that bond is celebrating the happy times together, like this wonderful trip to Florida." - Kati

“ I can't believe my wish is coming true! ”

LEGO bricks, superheroes, and dinosaurs are just a few of Ben’s favorite things. Diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2015, the eight-year-old has two more years of chemotherapy ahead of him. Here, his mom Kati reflects on the impact of Ben's wish to go to LEGOLAND®:

My favorite memory is Ben whispering, as we were walking towards the entrance of Legoland, "I can’t believe my wish is coming true."  His wish was an incredibly positive, happy experience for him – and for his brother. Ben and Gabe are best friends.  Part of that bond is the result of leaning on each other during tough times.  And part of that bond is celebrating the happy times together, like this wonderful trip to Florida.

The elevator in the Legoland hotel has a disco ball and plays disco music once the door closes.  Each time we were in the elevator, we would have a dance party! These elevator dance parties capture the mood of our whole trip- pure fun! In fact, Ben kept singing, "Everything is Awesome" - the theme song from The LEGO Movie.

Ben has a remarkable way of finding something positive in the midst of challenges.  Since his Make-A-Wish trip, he has said that, "Sometimes sad things happen, like me getting cancer, but a lot of times good things come from sad things – like, I got my wish come true!" My son’s wish experience has molded his attitude in a very positive way.

I was deeply touched that the kindness of others provided this trip for us, because it wasn’t something I could provide on my own. Every time the boys laughed together, I wanted to live in the moment forever….Ben’s wish felt like sunshine breaking through the storm clouds.
