Stephen takes a deep breath as he begins to write his name. With his contract signed, he officially becomes a Boston Celtics player!
Living with intractable epilepsy, Stephen, 11, navigates unpredictabilities each day. One thing that remains constant is his love of basketball -- and thanks to the partnership of the Boston Celtics, Stephen’s wish to be a Celtics player is granted!
Celtics President Rich Gotham, also a Make-A-Wish board member, welcomes his newest recruit at a press conference at TD Garden. Then, courtside in his personalized jersey, green lights wash over Stephen as the announcer introduces the rookie. Exhilarated, he runs onto the court to high-fives from Kelly Olynyk and Amir Johnson. Even mascot Lucky the Leprechaun and Celtics cheerleaders are there! The veteran players point up, where Stephen sees his name on the jumbotron before working his way up and down the court, shooting hoops with his new teammates.
It's a day that reflects the teamwork it takes to grant a wish – and one that Stephen and his family will never forget. Stephen will always carry the joy of his draft day with him. After all, says the Celtics’ newest team member, “I’m just getting warmed up!”
