The event, held on April 7, 2018, at the InterContinental Boston, drew nearly 500 guests to enjoy an evening of stories that showed how wishes put children at “center court” by immersing them in what they love most.

The Boston Celtics were honored with the 2018 Wish Hero Award for three decades of outstanding partnership, highlighted through remarks from 2013 Celtics wish recipient Terry Agnant  as well as a tribute video featuring Celtics wishes over the years. Make-A-Wish Board Chair Jay Mattie presented the award, which was accepted by team president Rich Gotham along with Celtics player Abdel Nader and Bain Capital Managing Director and member of the Boston Celtics ownership group Steve Barnes. Special guests in attendance also included Celtics legends Cedric Maxwell and Brian Scalabrine

Our evening program began with John, 14, making a memorable entrance as he drummed with a group of Revolutionary War reenactors. John and his family traveled from Alaska for his wish to be in the Patriots’ Day reenactment, and the gala marked the start of his visit to Boston. Guests were also treated to a surprise wish reveal for Cameron, 15, whose wish to meet the NOAA Hurricane Hunters was granted on stage with surprise appearances by WCVB-TV chief meteorologist Harvey Leonard and Lieutenant Lindsey Norman from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Wish parent Matt Hourican shared his family’s awe-inspiring experience from his 10-year-old son Nikolas’ wish to visit the Grand Canyon, and wish recipient Patrick, 17, took the audience inside his Jackson Hole backcountry skiing wish with a video he created and shared following reflections from his father, Jim Massman. Make-A-Wish CEO Charlotte Beattie emphasized the vital role that our community of supporters plays in moving us closer to our vision of reaching every eligibile child.

The heartwarming evening raised nearly $1 million to grant wishes for over 100 children with life-threatening medical conditions in the coming months. We thank all of our sponsors – in particular, our Presenting Sponsor, Steve and Deborah Barnes together with Bain Capital Community Partnership – as well as our event participants, guests, volunteers, and in-kind donors for joining with us to lead every child to “center court” through a wish-come-true!
