Daniel DeLeon of Providence Wishes for a Professional Snap-on Tool Set to Pursue Dream, February 25
Make-A-Wish® Massachusetts and Rhode Island Celebrates
30 Years of Wish Granting
February 20, 2017 (Providence, RI) – In 2017, Make-A-Wish® Massachusetts and Rhode Island is celebrating its 30th anniversary with the goal of granting over 400 wishes for children with life-threatening illnesses. Amongst the first wishes to be granted by the organization in its milestone year is for Daniel DeLeon, 17, of Providence, RI on Saturday, February 25, 2017. While receiving chemotherapy for a germ cell tumor, Daniel often felt sick and was unable to go to school or interact with friends. Now in remission, he is regaining quality of life and thinking about the future. Through Make-A-Wish Massachusetts and Rhode Island, the aspiring mechanical engineer and current auto mechanics student wishes for a professional tool set from Snap-on Incorporated. “I missed a lot of my life because of chemo,” says Daniel. “Having cancer changed the way I saw things. I am so thankful and grateful.”
According to his father, while other teen boys were interested in the make and model of car they were driving, Daniel has always been fascinated by what’s under the hood. Daniel is studying auto mechanics at Providence Career and Technical Academy where his teacher, Douglas Nelson of Cranston, inspired the shy teen to pursue his passion. For his wish, Daniel will receive a complete set of metric tools and a Tool Chest and Roll Cab donated by Snap-on Incorporated, as well as a toolshed to store the tools provided by Make-A-Wish Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The professional Snap-on tool set will take Daniel one-step closer to his dream of becoming a mechanical engineer like his grandfather. “I love working with my hands,” says Daniel. “Tools never lose value. I can use them in my career.”
“Snap-on is honored to grant this special wish for Daniel,” said Sam Bottum, Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for Snap-on Incorporated. “We hope this small gesture will provide Daniel with the tools he needs to move forward with hope, strength and joy and to follow his dream of becoming a mechanical engineer one day.”
“We are delighted to grant Daniel’s wish as one of our first Rhode Island wishes in 2017, our 30th year of wish granting!” says Charlotte Beattie, Chief Executive Officer of Make-A-Wish Massachusetts and Rhode Island. “We are grateful to Snap-on for giving so generously to make Daniel’s wish come true. Working with a partner of excellence like Snap-on along with all of our supporters throughout the community, has helped us provide joy to nearly 8,000 children like Daniel since 1987. Daniel is sure to remember his special wish experience for years to come.”
