Big Y donates $150,000 to Make-A-Wish Foundation


It was a very special day for Make-A-Wish on Thursday, as Big Y presented the group with a $150,000 check. The money will be used to grant 18 wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. 2 children from Springfield and one from Chicopee were there for Thursday’s check presentation.

According to Julian Edelman’s draft report, he shouldn’t be where he is today – a Super Bowl champion and an all-star NFL player. Rosie Doherty, 19, knows this feeling well. Having been diagnosed with epilepsy, she and her family were told she wouldn’t be able to talk, walk, read or run. Both Julian and Rosie had two choices: prove them right or prove them wrong. Both proved them wrong.

Big Y raises $150,000 for Make-A-Wish to help kids' dreams come true

A dollar here, a dollar there. That's all it takes to grant wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses.
Through the generosity of their customers buying "Wish Stars" for one dollar each, Big Y World Class Markets throughout New England helped raise $150,000 for Make-A-Wish Massachusetts and Rhode Island and Make-A-Wish Connecticut ($75,000 each).

An ‘Evening of Wishes’ to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation


The Make a Wish foundation’s largest annual fundraiser took place Saturday evening. The fourth annual “Evening of Wishes” event raises funds to help current and future wishes comes true for children diagnosed with life-threatening medical conditions. Eyewitness News meteorologist Michelle Muscatello emceed the event held at the Omni Hotel in Providence.

Elise Strom joined Make-A-Wish Massachusetts and Rhode Island in mid-September as the regional director in Rhode Island. With the regional office based in East Providence, Make-A-Wish Massachusetts and Rhode Island grants wishes for children between the ages of 2 1/2 and 18 with life-threatening medical conditions. In its 28-year history, the organization has granted more than 7,000 wishes for children in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
