Make-A-Wish celebrates 30 years, honors Sox

Guests celebrated three decades of wish granting by Make-A-Wish Massachusetts and Rhode Island on Saturday at the InterContinental Boston. The evening, emceed by Liz Brunner, included a tribute to the Red Sox, a longtime partner that has granted approximately 200 wishes for kids across the country. Also in attendance was longtime Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield and Wally the Green Monster was there to pose for photos with wish recipients from the last 30 years.

Make-A-Wish Massachusetts and Rhode Island is celebrating 30 years of granting wishes. At its 30th Anniversary Gala, it kicked off the celebration in style alongside some of the area’s biggest players — in sports and in business. “It was incredible,” said Charlotte Beattie, CEO of Make-A-Wish Massachusetts and Rhode Island. “Everyone came together and raised over $1 million, which will allow us to give wishes to children over the next few months.”

It was a night of granting wishes and watching the NCAA championship basketball tournament in Longmeadow, Saturday night. Hundreds of people packed the Longmeadow Country Club for the 6th annual “Swish Night,” hosted by the Make-A-Wish organization. Not only were the guests watching what was happening on the court, they were also helping make wishes come true for children who are terminally ill.

For three very special people, it was a night to remember as the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Massachusetts and Rhode Island staged its 'Swish Night' at the Longmeadow Country Club on Saturday. The event was staged as a fundraiser for the organization and guests were treated to plenty of food, socializing, music, and a large screen projection television for watching a college championship basketball game.

A local teen who is beating cancer is now back on track towards his career goal with help from a nonprofit. Daniel DeLeon is recovering after being diagnosed with a germ cell tumor, which is now in remission after chemotherapy. During treatment, his love of working on cars kept him motivated. Saturday morning, Make-A-Wish Massachusetts and Rhode Island surprised him with a full set of professional-grade tools donated by Snap-on Tools.

It was a special delivery for a Providence teenager on Saturday. 17- year-old Daniel DeLeon, a student at Providence Career and Technical Academy, loves tools. Even when he was sick in the hospital, battling cancer, he says he was dreaming about fixing his car. So it was no surprise that his wish involved tools - a set of SnapOn tools via Make-A-Wish of Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Gronk makes wishes come true for young fans

We’re sure that Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski is pining to play in the Super Bowl, but he can’t. But Gronk’s doing the next best thing: bringing a smile to the faces of kids suffering from a serious illness. Gronk hung out with a couple of young fans at Foxborough this week, playing video games with 12-year-old Brian Azinheira of Connecticut and 7-year-old Gavin Gilberston from Minnesota. The get-together was arranged by Make-A-Wish Massachusetts and Rhode Island and the Patriots.

The fans gave a loud ovation to 11-year-old Stephen Register of Needham, Massachusetts, late in the opening quarter when he was shown on the Jumbotron. On Tuesday, as part of a Make-A-Wish memory, the team signed him to an honorary one-day contract and he practiced with Celtics players Amir Johnson and Kelly Olynyk, received a personalized team jersey, and participated in a press conference with players asking him questions.
